A Brief History of Stethen-Smith Construction Comp

In 1989, Doug Stethen, along with his wife Debbie, began Stethen Construction Company. The Stethen Family had a reputation for success in Knoxville's construction markets and as a result, Stethen Construction Company quickly became a premier General Contractor in the Knoxville area.

Meanwhile, in 1996, Sam Smith created H.S. Smith Constructors. H.S. Smith Constructors began with a strong step forward and soon began to establish strong roots in the Knoxville area. The young company was specialized in a variety of areas, including commercial, industrial, & church projects.

After only one year of operation, H.S. Smith Construction merged with Stethen Construction Company to form Stethen-Smith Construction Company in 1997. This was the merger of not only two companies, but also two long-time business associates. Doug Stethen and Sam Smith had previously worked together for years as their careers had intersected at Rentenbach Construction Company. They would now have an opportunity to work together again, as their companies would be fused together.

After the merger of Stethen-Smith Construction was complete, nearly one year after the companies first joined, Doug Stethen retired from the company to raise horses on his farm. As a result, Sam Smith assumed sole ownership and leadership of Stethen-Smith Construction Company.

Stethen-Smith Construction Company is amidst exciting times. We are continually experiencing growth and maturing as a company. Sam Smith still assumes the leadership role and has surrounded himself with a team of knowledgeable and capable staff members. In fact, the Stethen-Smith Construction Company office houses over 100 years of construction experience and contains a variety of professional strengths.
